From Labrador to Chihuahua: A Closer Look at Ten Breeds

The Labrador Retriever has topped popularity rankings in many countries for decades. The German Shepherd, created in 1899 by Max von Stephanitz, remains the ultimate all-purpose working dog. The French Bulldog, with its flat muzzle typical of brachycephalic breeds, has taken over cities. The Siberian Husky fascinates with its blue or mismatched eyes. The Chihuahua, the smallest breed in the world, weighs between 1 and 3 kg. Each breed has a precise FCI standard defining its proportions, coat, and temperament.

FCI Standards and Physical Characteristics

The Fédération Cynologique Internationale sorts breeds into ten groups. The Golden Retriever and the Labrador belong to Group 8 (retrievers). The Beagle falls under Group 6 (scent hounds). The Rottweiler, which originated in the town of Rottweil, is classified in Group 2 (Pinscher and Schnauzer type). The Poodle comes in four official sizes: standard, medium, miniature, and toy. The Yorkshire Terrier, once a rat-catcher in English mines, belongs to Group 3 (terriers).
