Emblems, Animals, and Heraldic Symbols
Many car logos feature an animal or a coat of arms. Peugeot's lion dates back to 1858, well before the brand's first cars. Ferrari's prancing horse was borrowed from an Italian World War I pilot, Francesco Baracca. Lamborghini's bull nods to its founder's zodiac sign. Alfa Romeo's Biscione serpent comes straight from the coat of arms of the city of Milan. These symbols carry an industrial and regional history, often much older than the automobile itself.
Acronyms, Countries, and Parent Companies
Behind many logos are acronyms: BMW for Bayerische Motoren Werke, SAAB for Svenska Aeroplan Aktiebolag, FIAT for Fabbrica Italiana Automobili Torino. Audi's four rings commemorate the 1932 merger of Audi, DKW, Horch, and Wanderer into the Auto Union. Today, the industry has consolidated into a handful of groups: Volkswagen owns Audi, Škoda, SEAT, Bentley, Lamborghini, Bugatti (via Rimac since 2021), and Porsche.
