From Scandinavian Raids to the North Sea Empire
The Vikings were far more than a horde of raiders. They were farmers, traders, settlers, and mercenaries from Norway, Denmark, and Sweden. Their reach was immense: the Seine and Paris in 885-886, the Volga all the way to Baghdad via the Varangians, the Mediterranean from the south. The quiz covers major political figures: Harald Bluetooth, who unified Denmark; Cnut the Great, who ruled England, Denmark, and Norway simultaneously; and Alfred the Great, who held off the invasion and negotiated the Danelaw. Dates, treaties, and battles are all verified source by source.
Norse Mythology, Sagas, and Material Culture
You can't talk about the Vikings without the gods of Asgard. Odin, Thor, Loki, Freyr, the Valkyries, and Valhalla structure a cosmology later described by Snorri Sturluson in the Prose Edda. The quiz also digs into material culture: the runic futhark, the berserkers, the Oseberg ship, and Iceland's Althing, founded in 930.
