Cells, Organelles, and Genetics
The cell has been recognized as the basic unit of life since the work of Schleiden and Schwann in 1838-1839. The quiz covers the distinction between eukaryotes and prokaryotes, and the roles of mitochondria, ribosomes, and chloroplasts. On the genetics side, you'll find the four nitrogenous bases A, T, G, C, the double helix described by Watson and Crick in 1953, Mendel's laws, mitosis, and the 46 chromosomes of the human karyotype. The hardest questions go as far as helicase, the centromere, and the Krebs cycle.
Photosynthesis, Evolution, and Great Biologists
Another key block: photosynthesis in chloroplasts, chlorophyll, and the oxygen released by plants. Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection, published in 1859, holds a special place, as do Louis Pasteur (the rabies vaccine in 1885, disproving spontaneous generation with swan-neck flasks), Edward Jenner and smallpox, and Karl Landsteiner and the ABO blood groups discovered in 1901. These names shape the history of the field.
