2026 World Cup — the tournament is underway in the USA, Canada, and Mexico

The 2026 World Cup kicked off on June 11, 2026 at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City and will wrap up on July 19 at MetLife Stadium (New Jersey). It's the first edition with 48 teams and three host countries — the United States, Canada, and Mexico — for a total of 104 matches played across 16 host cities. A historic edition: 48 teams, 12 groups, 16 cities

The format has changed dramatically: 12 groups of 4 teams (instead of 8 groups of 4 in 2022), 72 group-stage matches followed by 32 knockout matches (including the round of 32). The USA is hosting 78 matches, including every match from the quarterfinals on, while Mexico and Canada each host 13. Four nations are playing in their first-ever World Cup — Cape Verde, Curaçao, Jordan, and Uzbekistan — with Curaçao becoming the smallest nation ever to qualify (~156,000 residents).

Italy absent for a 3rd straight time

One of the biggest surprises of the playoffs: four-time champion Italy is missing the World Cup for the 3rd time in a row after being eliminated by Bosnia and Herzegovina on March 31, 2026 (1-1, lost on penalties). It's an unprecedented drought for the Azzurri, who haven't played in a World Cup final tournament since 2014. Sweden, Wales, and Nigeria are among the other notable absences from this 48-team edition.

Early group-stage surprises

Some highlights from the first week: Mexico beat South Africa 2-0 in the opening match at Estadio Azteca (the first stadium in history to host 3 men's World Cups), the USA routed Paraguay 4-1 at SoFi Stadium with a brace from Folarin Balogun, and Canada earned its first-ever World Cup point (1-1 against Bosnia, with a goal from Cyle Larin in the 78th minute). On the records front, Mbappé became France's all-time leading scorer (58 goals) after a brace against Senegal, and Messi tied Miroslav Klose's World Cup goal record (16 goals) with a hat trick against Algeria.
