The setting is postwar industrial Birmingham. The Shelbys return from the trenches, scarred by their time as sappers at the Battle of the Somme with the Royal Warwickshire Regiment. The gang's name comes from a tradition that actually existed in Birmingham between the 1890s and 1910s: sewing razor blades into the peak of a cap for use in close combat. Alfie Solomons, the IRA, Oswald Mosley: Allies and Enemies
