The African continent has 54 UN-recognized states, each with its own capital. Some are obvious: Cairo, Algiers, Nairobi. Others trip up even hardcore geography quiz fans. Lagos? Nope, Nigeria moved its capital to Abuja in 1991. Abidjan? Not that one either, Côte d'Ivoire has officially had Yamoussoukro as its capital since 1983. This African capitals quiz covers all 54 countries on the continent, from the largest nations to the smallest island states.

Political Capitals vs. Economic Capitals

Several African countries distinguish between the official capital and the economic hub. South Africa takes this to the extreme with three capitals: Pretoria (executive), Cape Town (legislative), and Bloemfontein (judicial). Benin maintains Porto-Novo as its constitutional capital even though the government operates out of Cotonou. In Burundi, Gitega replaced Bujumbura as the political capital in 2019. These subtleties are what make the expert level so tough.

Recently Relocated Capitals

Africa saw several capital relocations during the 20th century. Nigeria left Lagos for Abuja in 1991, seeking a city that was more central and ethnically neutral. Tanzania officially made Dodoma its capital in 1996, although the decision dates back to 1973. Malawi moved its capital from Zomba to Lilongwe in 1975. These recent changes explain why so many players still mix up the old and new capitals.
