Some countries relocate their capital for political, economic, or environmental reasons. Indonesia moved its capital from Jakarta to Nusantara in 2024. Myanmar shifted from Yangon to Naypyidaw in 2005. Kazakhstan moved from Almaty to Astana in 1997. Burundi chose Gitega in 2019 to replace Bujumbura.

South Africa holds the record with three capitals: Pretoria (administrative), Cape Town (legislative), and Bloemfontein (judicial). Malaysia splits its functions between Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya. Bolivia distinguishes between Sucre (constitutional) and La Paz (seat of government).
The most obscure capitals
